Senior Self Defense
The American Cane System includes Cane Fu, a self defense system that uses the cane as a personal protection device. In this basic level of Cane-Fu students will learn how to strike an attacker in the knee, shin, or elbow. Though the training is at the beginner level, students often learn quickly how to perform simple but effective self-defense maneuvers. As you progress to the intermediate level of Cane-Fu, you learn more strikes, how to use the crook and certain defensive maneuvers. Every level advancement means you are gaining mobility, mastering techniques and learning to block chokes and grabs. Contact information for instruction can be found here.
In the advanced level you may learn the "Dirty Dozen" and other blocks, and drills. But before you are done, you will learn significant mental preparedness and skilled defensive techniques. Contact information for instruction can be found here.
Other Self Defense and Exercise Systems
Cane Chi is a complete exercise, fitness and rehabilitation system designed to be performed using the cane with or without a resistance band. It includes balancing techniques as well as isometric and isotonic exercises.
Yoga - Basic Skills
Grand Master Shuey will introduce you to some of the beginning Poses in yoga like “down facing dog” and “Warrior I, II, and III’. In Yoga, each pose is called a position. Yoga positions help you develop better balance, strength, and flexibility. They also promote the flow of energy through the body. You will also learn “Deep breathing” techniques to calm the body. One of these I find especially effective is the “Diaphragmatic” (Belly) breathing which slows the heart rate and can lower blood pressure.
Yoga - Intermediate skills
Grand Master Shuey will introduce students to more advanced Poses in yoga like “bound ankle” and “Warrior III”. Here, students will begin to combine poses by uniting them into sequences, moving through each pose in a rhythm. Breathing exercises are expanded, adding motion such as raising your arms in sync with your breathing and adding focus on internal parts of the body for exercise.
Yoga - Advanced skills
Finally Grand Master Shuey will introduce students to the advanced level of Yoga that ensures fluidity of movement and breathing for better quality of life. Here, students will move through several poses combination sequences. You will continue the breathing exercises that help your circulation and life flow. When you are ready for this level of Yoga, you already know the difference it is making in your life and your mental outlook. We won't turn you into a human pretzel, but you will enjoy flexibility and endurance you thought were gone forever.
Silver Dragons Program
The American Cane System includes the Silver Dragons Martial Arts Program. Within the Silver Dragons curriculum, there are three sash levels that precede the black sash, or black belt level. Techniques and katas must be learned prior to progressing to the next level of training. Once a devotee has successfully completed the Silver Dragons Program, he or she may become an instructor in several of the other American Cane System programs.
